Is this mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled back the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it, probably from the AC unit on the other side. We’ve lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason for their coughs and what's the safest way to get it cleaned here in Dubai?

Based on my professional experience with mold inspection in Dubai, it is highly probable that the black mold you discovered is a significant contributing factor to your children's persistent cough. The type of black mold commonly found behind furniture and near AC units in the UAE is often Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger. These molds produce mycotoxins and spores that, when inhaled, are potent irritants to the respiratory system, especially in children, leading to chronic coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions.
The climate in Dubai is a primary catalyst for this issue. The extreme humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates massive condensation problems. This condensation often forms within wall cavities, particularly on cooler exterior walls where an AC unit is mounted on the other side, creating the perfect damp, dark environment for toxic mold to thrive unseen. Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold will aerosolize a massive concentration of spores and mycotoxins throughout your apartment, potentially worsening your family's health symptoms and contaminating other areas. Standard cleaning agents like bleach are ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually exacerbate the problem. The situation requires immediate professional assessment and remediation. In Dubai, proper remediation involves advanced containment procedures, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the contaminated material and eliminate the source of moisture, in accordance with international standards.
