Is this mold dangerous and need professional testing?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches every morning. Is this type of mold especially dangerous, and should we get a professional test done before cleaning it ourselves?

Black mould growth behind furniture on exterior walls is very common in Dubai villas, especially during humid periods. The wall likely gets cold from year-round AC, and when humid air condenses on it, it creates the perfect damp environment for mould. The symptoms you describe—morning stuffy nose and headaches—are classic signs of a mould-related irritation, even from common species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus.

While not all mould is highly toxic, any active growth releasing spores into your sleeping area is a health concern that should be addressed. For a growth of this size and due to its location on a structural wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning can often disturb a much larger colony hidden within the wall cavity, drastically increasing your exposure.

An inspection would identify the moisture source (often condensation, but sometimes a hidden leak) and the mould species. This is critical, as remediation methods differ. In Dubai, proper remediation follows standards like the IICRC S520, which focuses on containment and removal, not just surface wiping. After remediation, a clearance test from an independent lab is the only way to verify the air quality is safe. For a situation affecting health in a bedroom, this verified approach is the most reliable path to restoring your indoor health.
