Is this mold dangerous and needs professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, but this morning I lifted the edge and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots underneath. It's the worst in the corner where the unit drips. My wife has started getting a stuffy nose in the mornings and I'm worried it's related. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold removal company in here, and can I just clean the carpet myself in the meantime?

Based on the black and green fuzzy growth and your wife's symptoms, this requires immediate professional attention. The consistent moisture from the AC leak has created an ideal breeding ground for mold in Dubai's humid climate, where it can proliferate rapidly behind walls and under flooring.

Do not attempt to clean the carpet yourself. Disturbing the mold by scrubbing or vacuuming can aerosolize spores, significantly increasing airborne contamination throughout your bedroom and potentially worsening respiratory issues. Your priority is to stop the source; have an AC technician repair the leak immediately to prevent further water damage.

For a situation of this extent, especially with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Remediation involves more than surface cleaning; it requires containing the area, safely removing contaminated porous materials like carpet and underlay, and using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers to remove spores from the air. In the UAE, reputable companies follow standards like the IICRC S520 for proper mold remediation.

Until a professional assesses it, restrict access to the room and avoid disturbing the affected area. Keep the AC off in that room to prevent it from circulating spores to other parts of the home. A proper assessment will determine the full extent of the growth and the required scope of work to restore your indoor air quality safely.
