Is this mold dangerous and who should test it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled out a bunch of winter clothes from the back of the built-in wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm worried the AC unit might be spreading spores. How do I find out if this is the dangerous kind of mold and who should I call to get it properly tested?

The mold you've found is a legitimate health concern, especially with the symptoms you're describing. In Dubai's humid climate, built-in wardrobes on exterior walls are common sites for condensation and mold growth, particularly when storing items like winter clothes that can trap moisture. The constant AC use can circulate spores from this source throughout the home.

You should not attempt to identify the mold type by color, as both black (like Cladosporium) and green (like Aspergillus) molds are common here and some species can produce allergens and irritants. The persistent coughing in your children is a strong indicator that the environment is affecting their respiratory systems.

For a situation this visible and with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Do not call a general cleaning company first. Look for a certified indoor environmental professional or a company with a dedicated microbiology lab. They will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration of spores, which is the only way to determine the actual risk and required remediation scope. This is crucial as improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. In Dubai, reputable providers should be able to explain their testing methodology and provide a clear report on their findings.
