Is this mold from AC leak a DIY fix or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing these black and greenish speckles spreading out from the corner of the wall. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back darker a few days later. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

That pattern suggests active mold growth, which is common when AC condensation soaks into building materials like drywall or carpet backing in Dubai's climate. Vinegar is a surface disinfectant but cannot address the moisture source or remove the fungal roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials.

For a leak lasting weeks, the moisture has likely spread behind the wall or under the carpet, creating an unseen reservoir that will continue to feed regrowth. This isn't a DIY fix with stronger cleaners; scrubbing can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.

Professional assessment is advised here. They will identify the full extent of the damage using moisture meters, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and safely remove the affected porous materials (like the carpet section and potentially a portion of the drywall) that cannot be salvaged. The critical first step is to stop the AC leak permanently; no remediation will last if the water source isn't fixed.

In the UAE, reputable remediators follow standards like the IICRC S520, focusing on containment and verified removal rather than just spraying chemicals. They should provide documentation, such as before-and-after moisture readings and preferably post-remediation verification, to confirm the issue is resolved.
