Is this mold growth a DIY fix or professional job?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit and now we have these black and greenish splotches spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity spiked. Should I just try to scrub it off myself with bleach, or is this something where I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company?

That wall growth is a textbook case of moisture-related mold from your AC leak, and the Dubai humidity is accelerating it. Scrubbing it with bleach is a common but ineffective approach; it may lighten the stain but won't address the root cause or hidden growth.

For a leak that's been active for weeks, the moisture has likely penetrated the wall and possibly the space behind it. The splotches you see are often just the surface manifestation. DIY cleaning risks disturbing the mold, releasing spores into your bedroom air, and potentially spreading the contamination.

The required fix involves three steps: stopping the AC leak at its source, properly drying the affected building materials, and then remediating the mold. Given the location behind a wardrobe, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls without destructive exploration. UAE regulations, particularly in communities governed by Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) or Dubai Municipality guidelines, often require proper containment and disposal procedures for moldy materials to prevent cross-contamination.

In many cases like this, a professional job is justified to ensure it's resolved completely and to provide post-remediation verification testing from an independent lab, which is the only way to confirm the air and surfaces are back to a healthy baseline.
