Is this mold in my Dubai villa a DIY job?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah 3 has been feeling really humid lately. I just pulled our leather sofa away from the wall and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy patches spreading up the corner, probably from a slow leak we never noticed. It covers an area about the size of a large dinner plate. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and bleach, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

A dinner plate-sized patch of black and green mould, especially behind furniture in a humid villa, is a significant growth and not a typical DIY job. The combination of Jumeirah's high humidity and a suspected slow leak creates a perfect environment for mould that has likely spread deeper into the wall than what's visible on the surface.
While bleach or vinegar can clean surface mould on non-porous tiles, they are ineffective and can be hazardous on porous materials like drywall and concrete, which are common in UAE villas. Bleach only bleaches the colour and its high water content can actually feed the root system deeper within the wall, causing it to return stronger. Disturbing it yourself also risks releasing a large number of spores into your home's air. For a growth of this size and cause, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact moisture source (e.g., a pipe leak, condensation, or rising damp) and use moisture meters to determine the full extent of the damage behind the wall. Reputable Dubai-based remediation companies follow strict protocols for containment, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials. The key is to fix the water problem first; otherwise, the mould will simply return. Given the climate, after remediation, consider a humidity audit. Year-round AC can sometimes create cold spots that lead to condensation, so ensuring your system is balanced and that dehumidifiers are used in problem areas can prevent recurrence. For verifiable results, look for providers who can offer before-and-after testing from an accredited lab. |
