Is this mold in my Dubai villa bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa has had a persistent damp smell ever since the heavy rains in February, and lately both my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats. I just pulled the bed away from the wall and found a patch of black spots behind it where the outside wall is. Is this definitely mold, and who should I call in Dubai to get a proper inspection and air quality test done?

The black spots behind your bed are very likely mold, given the damp smell and your symptoms. Stuffy noses and sore throats upon waking are common reactions to mold spores in the bedroom air. The persistent dampness is a key indicator, especially after Dubai's heavy rains, which can drive moisture through walls and create ideal conditions for mold growth in our high humidity climate.

You should call a professional mold inspection company that uses a certified microbiologist and has its own lab. Avoid general cleaners; this requires diagnostic testing. A proper inspection will involve taking air samples from your bedroom and a control sample from outside to compare spore counts, along with tape lifts of the visible growth for species identification in a lab. This is crucial because some species are more problematic than others.

In Dubai, look for a provider that follows international standards like IICRC and can provide a detailed report with lab results. This report will pinpoint the moisture source (often a tiny leak or condensation from AC ducts within the wall) and the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. The initial diagnosis is the most critical step to ensure the problem is solved permanently, not just wiped away.
