Is this mold in my kids' bedroom dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer break, and I'm starting to panic. I've noticed some black speckles along the bottom of the wall behind the dresser in their bedroom, which is right under the AC vent. With the humidity lately in our Jumeirah villa, I'm terrified it's mold. How do I find a reputable company to do a proper inspection and tell me how bad this really is?

The black speckles under the AC vent are a significant red flag, especially given the high humidity and your children's symptoms. While not all mold is toxic, its presence indicates a moisture problem that can cause respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, and worsened allergies, particularly in children.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. AC units produce condensation, and if a drain line is slightly blocked or insulation is poor, that moisture feeds mold growth inside walls or ducts, spreading spores into the room. A proper inspection is crucial to assess the severity. Avoid companies that only do a visual check. A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to find the water source and typically take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species and spore concentration in the air your kids are breathing. This evidence-based approach is the only way to know the actual risk and plan an effective remediation.

Look for a provider that is certified (like IICRC) and can clearly explain their diagnostic process, including how they will deliver verifiable, lab-generated results. For a situation involving child health and potential hidden growth in a villa, this level of thoroughness is necessary.
