Is this mold in our Dubai home a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of dark, fuzzy black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall itself and seems to have appeared since the humidity really spiked last month. My husband thinks we can just scrub it with bleach, but I'm worried it's more serious. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves or should we call a professional cleaning company in Dubai?

The dark fuzzy spots you describe are likely mould, and given Dubai's high humidity and the location in a closet, it's almost certainly moisture-related. Many species appear black, but only a lab culture can confirm if it's the notorious Stachybotrys (toxic black mould) or a more common, less hazardous type like Cladosporium or Aspergillus.
For a small patch (under 1 square foot) on a non-porous surface, a careful DIY approach is possible. However, bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can feed mould roots deep in porous materials like drywall. It also fails to address the spores. Use a dedicated mould cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub gently to avoid aerosolizing spores, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and discard any cleaning cloths immediately. Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source. In a closet, it's often condensation from an exterior wall or a nearby AC unit with a clogged drain line. For anything larger, if the mould has penetrated the wall, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water intrusion a visual inspection will miss. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible growth without solving the underlying humidity problem guarantees it will return. A reputable inspector will provide a lab report identifying the mould species, which dictates the required remediation protocol. |
