Is this mold on my wall causing my allergies?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading on the back of our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. I’m really worried because my allergies have been awful this month and I suspect this is the cause. What’s the fastest way to deal with this properly in Dubai's climate, and should I call my landlord first or just get a professional cleaner myself?

Those black spots are very likely mold, and yes, they can absolutely be the cause of your worsening allergies. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are a prime location for this issue due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. This creates condensation inside the wall cavity, providing the constant moisture mold needs to grow.

The fastest and most effective approach is to first inform your landlord in writing, with photos. Under typical Dubai rental laws, structural issues like moisture penetration from outside are the landlord's responsibility to investigate and fix. Simply cleaning the visible mold without addressing the underlying moisture source will result in it returning quickly.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion—whether it's a minor thermal bridge or a more significant leak—and take surface samples for lab identification. This evidence is crucial for your landlord to understand the scope of the problem.

While waiting for the landlord's response, keep the area as dry as possible. Wipe the spots with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) to help suppress growth, but avoid bleach as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen airborne spores. Ensure your AC is running consistently to control humidity levels indoors, as this is your first line of defense. Addressing the root cause is the only permanent solution for your allergies.
