Is this mold on my wall dangerous or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has these black speckles that just appeared over the last couple of weeks, and my husband's allergies have been awful. We're in a villa in Mirdif, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company right away?

Black speckles appearing rapidly on a wall in a Dubai villa, especially during a humid period, are a strong indicator of active mould growth. The correlation with your husband's worsened allergies is a significant red flag that this is not just a cosmetic issue.

In the UAE's climate, this is a common problem. The recent high humidity combined with the constant cooling from your AC can create a cold spot on that wall where condensation forms, providing the perfect damp environment for mould to flourish. A DIY approach with vinegar is not recommended here for a few reasons. Vinegar may only temporarily lighten the visible surface growth without addressing the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root-like structures) embedded within the wall. This can lead to a quick and often worse recurrence. More critically, scrubbing it yourself can inadvertently release a large number of spores into the air, severely aggravating allergies and potentially spreading the contamination.

For a case like this—visible growth with a direct health impact—a professional inspection is strongly advised. A proper assessment will identify the exact moisture source (could be condensation, a small internal leak, or capillary rising damp) and the extent of the growth, which might be more widespread inside the wall cavity. Reputable remediators in Dubai will use containment procedures and HEPA filtration to remove the mould safely without cross-contaminating your home, then address the underlying dampness to prevent it from returning. Look for a company that provides before-and-after verification, such as lab reports or instrument readings, to confirm the issue is resolved.
