Is this spreading black mold urgent to treat?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s grown a lot since I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago. With the humidity rising again, I'm worried it's a bigger problem.
How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, and could it be affecting the air quality in the whole room?

Yes, this is urgent to address professionally. The rapid growth you've observed, its location on an exterior wall, and the timing with rising humidity are all significant red flags. In Dubai's climate, this combination often points to a condensation issue or a hidden water intrusion within the wall cavity, which will not resolve on its own.
Black mould is a broad term, but the species commonly found in damp buildings here, like Stachybotrys chartarum, can produce irritants and allergens. These are known to affect indoor air quality, potentially causing worsened allergies, respiratory irritation, and a musty odour throughout the room, especially when the AC circulates the air. A professional inspection is critical. They will use a moisture meter to locate the water source and may recommend lab testing to identify the mould species. This diagnosis is essential for determining the correct remediation strategy, which will involve fixing the moisture problem, safely removing the contaminated materials, and cleaning the air. DIY attempts often disturb the mould, releasing more spores and spreading the problem. |
