Is this toxic black mold and who tests in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall where it meets the ceiling. The AC unit is right on the other side of that wall, and we keep the room pretty cold. With the humidity lately, I'm worried this is the dangerous kind. How can I tell if this is toxic black mold and who should I call to get it professionally tested in Dubai?

That pattern near your AC unit is likely Stachybotrys, often called "black mold," but many dark molds look similar. Stachybotrys requires constant moisture and cellulose (like drywall) to grow, which matches your description of a cold wall in Dubai's humidity causing condensation.

Only a lab culture can confirm the species and its potential for producing mycotoxins. Visual identification is unreliable. In Dubai's climate, with year-round AC use and high humidity, this type of wall condensation is a common source for such growth.

You should call a professional mold inspection company that takes samples for third-party laboratory analysis, not a general cleaner. In the UAE, look for providers certified by DM or DHA and who explicitly offer mold identification through a certified microbiology lab. A proper inspection involves moisture meters and air or surface sampling to be sent for analysis. The report should specify the mold species and concentration, which determines the remediation plan.

For now, avoid disturbing the area and consider lowering your AC temperature to reduce the condensation that's feeding it until a professional can assess.
