Is this toxic black mold in my kids' room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer break, and I just found a bunch of black spots behind their bedroom wardrobe. The room is on the side of the building that doesn't get much sun and the wall always feels a bit cold. Is this definitely toxic black mold, and who should I call to get it properly tested and removed in Dubai?

The black spots behind the wardrobe are very likely mold, given the cold wall and lack of sunlight—conditions that create condensation in Dubai's humid climate. While the term "toxic black mold" refers to Stachybotrys, many other black-colored molds can also cause health issues like the coughing you're describing.

You should first arrange for a professional mold inspection. The inspector will use a moisture meter to find the water source, often a small leak or penetrating damp from the building envelope. They should take an air sample from the room and a tape-lift sample of the mold itself for lab analysis to identify the species. This is critical, as the remediation protocol and health risk depend on the type.

For remediation, only hire a company that follows IICRC S520 standards, which is the industry guideline for proper mold removal. They should set up containment to prevent spores from spreading, use HEPA filtration, and remove the mold-infested materials. Crucially, they must fix the underlying moisture problem; otherwise, the mold will return. After remediation, a clearance test from an independent lab should confirm the spore count in the air has returned to normal levels. Avoid companies that just spray a biocide and leave, as this doesn't solve the root cause.
