Is this toxic mold and who to call in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and my own allergies are going crazy, especially at night. I’ve just pulled our bed away from the wall and found a patch of black spots in the corner behind the headboard. We’re in an older building in Deira and the AC unit in our bedroom is pretty old. Is this definitely toxic mold and who can I call for a proper inspection and air quality test?

The black spots behind your headboard are very likely mold, but only lab analysis can determine if it's a toxigenic species like Stachybotrys ("black mold"). In Dubai's humid climate, especially in older Deira buildings with older AC units, this is a common issue. The constant AC use creates condensation that feeds mold growth in hidden areas like behind furniture.

Your family's symptoms—persistent coughing and nighttime allergy flare-ups—are strong indicators of poor indoor air quality often associated with mold exposure. The location behind your bed means you're breathing in spores all night.

You need a professional mold inspection that includes air quality testing. Do not call a general cleaning company. Look for an indoor environmental professional or a company with a certified mold inspector. The key is that they must use a third-party, accredited microbiology lab to analyze samples. This provides an unbiased, scientific report identifying the species and spore count in your air.

The inspection should assess both the visible growth and the AC unit itself, as internal mold contamination is a frequent source of airborne spores in such cases. They will also use a moisture meter to find the water source, which is critical for a permanent solution.

For verification, any legitimate inspector should be able to provide their certification credentials (like from IICRC or IAQA) and explain exactly how their sampling process works. The final deliverable must be a detailed lab report, not just a verbal assessment or a sales quote for remediation. This evidence-based approach is your best next step.
