Is this toxic mold in my Dubai villa wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for about 5 years, and I’ve just noticed these black, speckled patches spreading in the back of the wardrobe on the exterior wall. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month, and I’m worried it’s the reason my son has had a persistent cough. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or is this a job for a professional company, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a bedroom closet?

Black mould growth in wardrobes on exterior walls is common in Dubai villas, especially during humid months. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing condensation when the humid air from inside meets the cold surface. This dampness creates the perfect environment for mould.

While the term "toxic black mould" typically refers to Stachybotrys, many black-coloured moulds can cause health issues. The persistent cough you've observed in your son is a recognised reaction to mould exposure, as spores are irritants to the respiratory system.

Using bleach from a hardware store is not recommended. It only bleaches the visible colour and does not kill the root structure. More importantly, it is mostly water, which can actually feed the mould deeper within the wall. For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould cleaner can be more effective, but only if the moisture source is eliminated.

Given the description—spreading patches, location on an exterior wall, and associated health symptoms—this indicates a persistent moisture issue. The root cause needs to be identified, whether it's insufficient insulation, a leak, or condensation from AC ducting in the wall. A professional inspection is advised to diagnose the moisture source, assess the extent, and properly remediate it. They will also identify the mould species, which helps in understanding potential risk. The cost for a single closet is typically more affordable than a full-room remediation, but you should request an on-site assessment for an accurate scope and quotation. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and consider using a dehumidifier.
