Is ths mold causing our coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the weather turned humid a few weeks ago. I’ve just noticed a patch of black spots in the corner behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom of our villa in Jumeirah. Is there a reliable company that can do a proper mold inspection and tell us if this is what’s making us sick?

Black mould growth behind furniture in humid conditions is a common trigger for the symptoms you describe. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the microclimate created by placing furniture against exterior walls creates ideal conditions for mould. The persistent coughs and headaches in your family are consistent with mould exposure, particularly in children and those with sensitivities.

In villas, the master bedroom's exterior walls are often the coldest surface at night, leading to condensation you never see. That trapped moisture feeds mould growth behind wardrobes and beds. The recent humid weather has significantly increased this condensation effect across homes in Jumeirah and other coastal communities.

You need a professional inspection. A proper assessment involves more than just looking at the visible patch; it includes using a moisture meter to check the wall's water content and a thermal camera to find hidden condensation points. The most critical step is air sampling to identify the spore types and concentrations in your bedroom's air, which is what your children are breathing. This is the only way to confirm if the levels are sufficient to cause health effects.

Look for a provider that conducts a comprehensive inspection and delivers a written report with lab results from an accredited microbiology lab. This report should detail the species present (like Aspergillus or Cladosporium, which are common here) and the spore count, which allows you to understand the actual risk. Avoid companies that offer immediate remediation without this diagnostic testing; the visible growth is often just a symptom of a larger hidden moisture issue.
