Is urgent mold in my Dubai villa a DIY job?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah Park has been feeling really humid lately and I just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage room to find several jumpers with black and green fuzzy spots on them. The room has a bit of a damp smell, and I'm worried it's spreading. How quickly do I need to get a professional in to handle this, or is it something I can tackle myself this weekend?

Given the visible growth and damp smell you're describing, this is likely beyond a DIY job. The fuzzy spots indicate active growth, and that damp smell suggests spores are already airborne in that room.

In Dubai's climate, indoor humidity can easily spike, especially in closed storage areas without consistent AC airflow. This creates perfect conditions for mold to colonize not just fabrics, but also walls and storage furniture. DIY cleaning with store-bought solutions often addresses the surface stain but misses the root moisture problem and can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the issue to other parts of your villa.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the humidity source—which could be anything from a minor condensation issue to a hidden leak. The goal is to identify and correct the moisture problem first; otherwise, the mold will simply return. Proper remediation also involves containing the affected area to prevent cross-contamination during cleaning, which is not something you can achieve with a DIY approach.

You should get an assessment soon, ideally within the week, to prevent further spread. Look for a provider that offers a clear diagnostic process and can explain how they will find and fix the source of the dampness, not just wipe away the visible growth.
