Is urgent professional mold remediation needed in shower?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black over the last couple of weeks, and the damp smell is getting really strong. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I know the humidity doesn't help. I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls. How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a good cleaner?

Black grout and a persistent damp smell in a Dubai bathroom often indicates active mould growth, which is common due to our high humidity. You can attempt to clean surface mould yourself with a dedicated grout cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and baking soda. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterwards.

If the mould reappears within a few weeks or the damp smell persists, the issue is likely behind the tiles or in the wall. In an older Jumeirah building, failed shower waterproofing or pipe condensation inside the wall is a frequent cause. Spreading behind walls is a legitimate concern that requires professional assessment.

Urgent professional remediation is recommended if you see the mould returning quickly, smell odours even when dry, or have residents with asthma or allergies. Professionals use moisture meters and borescopes to inspect inside walls without unnecessary demolition. For confirmed wall contamination, full remediation involves removing affected tiles and grout to address the source, not just the visible stain. Always request a post-remediation verification test to confirm the space is measurably clean and dry.
