Is urgent professional mold removal needed for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I’ve just found a patch of black and green mold, about the size of a dinner plate, behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a ground-floor villa in Jumeirah and it feels more humid than usual in there lately, even with the AC running. How urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Yes, with children showing respiratory symptoms and a mold colony that size in a humid room, you should arrange for professional assessment and remediation, not handle it yourself with bleach.

The visible patch is likely just the surface of a deeper colony within the wall or behind it, especially in ground-floor villas where rising damp is common. Bleach only addresses surface discoloration and can push spores deeper into porous materials like drywall, while the moisture problem remains. The persistent humidity you feel indicates an ongoing moisture source that must be identified and resolved first.

For your children's health, the type of mold matters. In Dubai's climate, the combination of high humidity and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for species like Aspergillus, which is commonly identified here and can exacerbate coughing and allergies. A professional inspection includes moisture mapping to find the source and air/surface sampling to identify the species, which informs the correct remediation protocol.

Urgency is high due to the symptoms. Look for a provider that follows IICRC S520 standards for remediation, which includes containment of the area to prevent spore spread, HEPA filtration, and verification of success through post-remediation testing. This is not a DIY project; improper handling can significantly increase airborne spore levels, temporarily worsening the indoor air quality and your kids' symptoms.
