Is urgent professional mold treatment needed for family cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's the black mold I just found behind our bedroom dresser in our Jumeirah Village Triangle villa. It’s a large patch, maybe a foot across, and the wall feels damp. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, or can we handle it ourselves over the weekend?

Given the damp wall and the size of the patch, this is a situation that warrants professional assessment. A foot-wide patch indicates significant moisture, which is the root problem. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to a one-off leak or, more commonly, persistent condensation from air conditioning units running against poorly insulated exterior walls.

For a family with persistent coughs, especially children, it is urgent to identify the mold type and the moisture source. While many common household molds are irritants, the presence of Stachybotrys (often called "black mold") can produce mycotoxins that are linked to more severe respiratory issues. Only a lab culture can confirm the species.

DIY cleaning is not recommended here. Disturbing a patch this large will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home, potentially worsening the coughs. Over-the-counter sprays only address surface discoloration, not the mold roots within the damp drywall or the underlying moisture issue. The wall material itself may need to be removed and replaced.

The immediate step is to have the area professionally inspected and tested. A proper assessment includes using a moisture meter to find the water source and air sampling to gauge spore levels in your home's air. This diagnostic approach is critical—remediating without fixing the moisture is futile. For a confirmed case with health symptoms, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) guidelines align with international standards, which call for containment of the area and professional removal to prevent cross-contamination.

You can cover the visible patch with plastic sheeting taped to the wall to temporarily limit spore release until help arrives, but avoid touching or disturbing it. Focus on improving air circulation in the room and ensure your AC unit's drain line is not clogged, as this is a frequent cause of hidden moisture in villas.
