Is urgent professional needed for black bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black over the last couple of weeks, and there's a really damp, earthy smell that hits you when you walk in. We run the exhaust fan, but it doesn't seem to help much, and I'm worried it's getting worse. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a good cleaner?

Black grout and a persistent damp smell in a bathroom, especially in Jumeirah, is a strong indicator of active mould growth. This is urgent because the conditions that allow it—high humidity and condensation—are constant in Dubai. The earthy smell suggests the growth may be more extensive than the surface, potentially within the wall cavity behind the tiles.
Attempting a DIY clean with bleach or a general cleaner is a temporary fix. It may remove the visible colour but often leaves the root structure intact, leading to quick regrowth. More importantly, aggressive scrubbing can damage the grout’s seal, creating more pores for moisture to penetrate and worsen the problem. A professional inspection is recommended to assess the moisture source, which could be a small plumbing leak, insufficient waterproofing, or condensation from constant AC use. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls without unnecessary damage. For confirmed growth, remediation involves antimicrobial treatment and addressing the underlying humidity, as surface cleaning alone is insufficient in this climate. Given the high humidity year-round, resolving the moisture issue is critical. This often means verifying your exhaust fan is powerful enough for the room size and actually venting outside, not just into the ceiling void, and potentially adding a dehumidifier. A company with its own microbiology lab can identify the mould type and provide a post-remediation verification test, which is the only way to confirm the issue is resolved. |
