Is wall mold urgent to treat or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has these black and greenish patches that have been slowly spreading for the last couple of weeks. We had that really humid spell a while back and it's gotten worse since then, and now I'm waking up with a bit of a stuffy nose. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach and a scrub?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants professional assessment, not a DIY attempt with bleach. The persistent spreading, visible colours, and your physical symptoms suggest an active colony that has likely penetrated beyond the surface.

In Dubai's climate, the recent high humidity event was a catalyst, but the underlying cause is a persistent moisture source, possibly from a small plumbing leak within the wall or significant condensation buildup behind the wardrobe. Bleach is a common but poor choice; it can lighten the stain but leaves the root structure intact, and its high water content can actually feed the mold, causing it to return stronger. It also fails to address the spores already in your air.

The urgency is moderate to high. While not an emergency requiring evacuation, the continued spread and your stuffy nose indicate ongoing spore release, which can worsen allergies and respiratory irritation over time. For a confirmed fix, you need two actions: identifying the moisture source and properly remediating the growth. A professional inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to find the hidden water issue. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, and using specialized antimicrobials on the frame, not just surface cleaners. Given the location behind furniture, the spread is likely more extensive than what's visible.

For a definitive answer on the mold type and its potential health impacts, a lab analysis of a tape-lift or air sample is the only method. This is a standard practice here to move from guesswork to a science-based solution.
