Is wardrobe mold causing my kids' nighttime cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just discovered black spots spreading on the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s been incredibly humid for the last month in our Jumeirah Park villa and the room always feels damp. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company, and roughly how much would that cost for a single room?

The black spots on your wardrobe are very likely mold, and yes, they could be causing your children's nighttime coughing. The persistent humidity in Jumeirah Park creates perfect conditions for mold growth, especially in less-ventilated areas like behind furniture. Mold spores become airborne and are easily inhaled, irritating the airways and leading to symptoms like coughing, particularly at night when the room is still.

Using supermarket bleach is not recommended. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deep in porous surfaces like wood, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar can be more effective. However, given the description of it "spreading," the infestation is likely more established than it appears, penetrating the wood or drywall.

For a villa bedroom, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts in the wall, a small leak, or poor ventilation—and the mold species. Remediation for a single room typically involves containment to prevent spore spread, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the moisture issue. Costs vary significantly based on the extent of the damage but expect an investment for proper, lasting remediation. Always request a post-clearance test to verify the air quality is safe; a reputable company like ours provides this documentation.
