Kid-safe black mold removal for bathroom with asthmatic child?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, and I’m really worried about their health, especially my youngest who has asthma. What’s the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of it for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's high humidity is a common trigger for respiratory issues, especially for children with asthma. The most effective approach combines immediate removal with addressing the underlying moisture problem.

For immediate, kid-safe removal of small patches, use a solution of white vinegar or a 3% hydrogen peroxide spray. Apply, let it sit for an hour, then scrub. Avoid bleach—it only removes the color and can irritate lungs. Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after the process. For persistent mold in grout or silicone, the sealant may need to be physically removed and replaced after the area is completely dry.

However, with an asthmatic child and visible black mold, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg; spores can be present in the air and hidden behind tiles or under flooring. A certified inspector can perform air quality tests to identify the spore count and species, which is critical for assessing health risk and planning a truly effective remediation. They will also identify the exact source of the condensation or moisture, which is essential for a permanent solution.

Long-term, control humidity with an exhaust fan running during and for 30 minutes after showers. Wiping down wet surfaces and fixing any AC drip line leaks are crucial. In many Dubai apartments, the root cause is often inadequate ventilation combined with our intense humidity.
