Kid-safe mold removal for bathroom with coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I'm starting to panic because I just found a bunch of black spots along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We're in a villa in Mirdif and I'm worried the humidity from our long showers is making it worse. What's the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to Dubai's high humidity, especially in older villas in areas like Mirdif where ventilation can be a challenge. The coughing could be related, as mold spores are a known respiratory irritant, particularly for children.

For a kid-safe DIY approach, start with ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet surfaces like tiles and glass doors with a squeegee to remove standing water. A dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce the ambient moisture that mold needs to grow.

For cleaning, avoid bleach as it only removes surface color and can irritate lungs. Instead, use distilled white vinegar. Spray it directly onto the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. For persistent spots, a paste of baking soda and water can be effective. Always wear gloves and ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.

If the mold returns quickly after thorough cleaning, or if it covers a large area (more than a square meter), the issue is likely deeper within the grout or behind the tiles. In these cases, professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify the moisture source. A proper remediation will involve removing and replacing compromised grout or sealing to prevent recurrence, which is often necessary for a permanent solution in our climate.
