Kid-safe way to remove bathroom mold causing cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot more lately, and I’ve just found black spots spreading in the corners of our master bathroom shower. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity from our showers is making it worse. What’s the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humid climate is common and can definitely contribute to respiratory irritation and coughing in children. The most effective and safe approach starts with identifying the mold type, as some species are more problematic than others.

For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar is often effective and kid-safe. Spray it on, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a brush and rinse. Avoid mixing chemicals like bleach and vinegar. Always wear a mask and gloves, ensure the room is well-ventilated, and keep children away during the process.

However, if the mold is widespread, keeps returning quickly, or is in the grout behind tiles, the issue is likely deeper within the wall or under the flooring. In older Jumeirah buildings, persistent mold often indicates a hidden moisture problem or compromised sealants that DIY cleaning can't fix.

For recurring mold or health concerns, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source and extent of growth. They can perform air and surface sampling to determine the species, which dictates the remediation protocol. Proper remediation for a family home involves containment, HEPA filtration, and safe removal methods to prevent spores from spreading to other living areas during cleanup. Afterwards, use an exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a dehumidifier to maintain humidity below 50%, which can help reduce the conditions that allow mold to regrow.
