Kid-safe way to remove black mold from bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold growing in the grout between the bathroom tiles in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. The bathroom doesn't have a window and the smell is really musty no matter how much I clean. What's the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this for good without having to call in a contractor?

Bathroom mould is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and AC condensation creating a damp environment. For a small area of black mould on grout, a kid-safe DIY approach is possible.
First, ensure your child is not in the room during cleaning. Ventilate the area as much as possible by running the bathroom exhaust fan and keeping the door open. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected grout with a stiff brush and a solution of white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide. These are less harsh than bleach but still effective on many surface moulds. After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with water and dry the area completely with a fan or hairdryer. The key is eliminating the moisture that allows mould to grow. Run your exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces. A small dehumidifier can help significantly in a windowless bathroom. However, persistent mould that returns quickly or causes a strong musty smell often indicates a deeper issue within the walls or behind the tiles, especially if the grout is cracked. In these cases, surface cleaning is a temporary fix. For health concerns like persistent coughing, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the species and the moisture source. They can perform air and surface sampling to determine if the mould is more widespread than it appears, which is a common scenario in our climate. This lab analysis provides the clarity needed for a targeted, permanent solution. |
