Landlord or DIY for mold behind wardrobe in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's been incredibly humid lately and I think the lack of air circulation back there caused it. What's the best way to deal with this ourselves, or should I call my landlord first?

Based on the description of a spreading black mold colony behind a wardrobe in Jumeirah, my professional recommendation is to contact your landlord immediately and refrain from DIY remediation. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai's high-humidity climate where condensation is a constant challenge due to year-round AC use, this is a significant indoor air quality issue.

The landlord is legally responsible for providing a habitable property under UAE tenancy law, which includes addressing structural or environmental issues like mold caused by lack of ventilation or building envelope defects. A DIY approach is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the colony without proper containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial agents will aerosolize the spores, contaminating your entire bedroom and HVAC system, posing a serious health risk.

The first step is to document the issue with photographs and formally notify your landlord in writing. They should arrange for a professional inspection and assessment. A certified mold inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol. The root cause, likely poor air circulation and a potential cold spot on the wall from the AC, must be addressed to prevent recurrence.

For a comprehensive and legally compliant solution, I recommend the landlord engages a specialist company like Saniservice. They are experts in mold inspection, testing, and remediation specifically for the UAE's climate and can ensure the problem is resolved safely and effectively. You or your landlord can contact them for a professional assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
