Landlord or me: Who cleans shower's black mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've been in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for about a year, and the grout between the tiles in my shower has started turning black over the last couple of months. I run the exhaust fan during and after showers, but the humidity just doesn't seem to clear out. Is this black mold something I'm responsible for cleaning, or should my landlord handle it since it might be a ventilation issue?

Black mold in shower grout is almost always due to excess humidity and inadequate ventilation, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. Under standard Dubai rental contracts (EJARI), the landlord is responsible for maintaining the property's core systems, including ventilation. If the exhaust fan is running but not effectively removing steam (a common problem with underpowered units), the root cause is a faulty or insufficient system, making it the landlord's responsibility to rectify.
You should first formally notify your landlord or building management in writing about the ineffective ventilation. They are typically obligated to inspect and repair or upgrade the exhaust fan. Until it's fixed, your own cleaning efforts will be temporary. For existing growth, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner can help manage it, but it will return without proper airflow. If the mold has spread significantly behind tiles or into the ceiling, or if there's a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is wise to assess the extent. In severe cases where occupant health is affected, a lab test can identify the mold species, which can strengthen your case for necessary remediation that the landlord should address. |
