Mold after rain: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has had a persistent dampness issue since the heavy rains a few weeks back. I’ve just pulled a chest of drawers away from the wall in my son’s bedroom and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate. It smells really musty. Is this something I need to call a professional cleaner for immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

That patch of black mold is a clear sign of trapped moisture, a very common issue here after heavy rains when humid air gets inside and condenses on cooler walls, especially behind furniture. For a patch that size and given the musty smell, a professional inspection is strongly recommended before any cleaning is attempted.

While small spots can sometimes be handled DIY, a dinner-plate-sized colony suggests a significant moisture problem within the wall cavity itself. Simply wiping the surface with bleach is ineffective and can be hazardous; it may temporarily remove the visible colour but leaves the root system intact, allowing it to regrow. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading them throughout the room.

The persistent dampness you mention is the core issue that must be addressed to prevent recurrence. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source of the water intrusion—whether it’s residual from the rain, a hidden pipe leak, or condensation from AC units—and assess the extent of the damage within the wall. In Dubai’s climate, this remediation must include correcting the humidity level to prevent future growth.

For your safety, keep the area contained; avoid disturbing the mold and consider closing the room's AC vent to prevent spores from circulating. A reputable remediation company will follow DM guidelines for containment, removal, and disposal, and should provide a post-remediation verification report, often including air or surface sampling, to confirm the environment has been returned to a healthy state.
