Mold behind bedroom wardrobe: who to call first?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a little, and now I’ve just found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s been humid for weeks and we keep the temperature low, so I guess moisture built up. What’s the fastest way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling the building management first or a professional cleaning company?

Call your building management or landlord first, as this is their legal responsibility to address under Dubai tenancy laws. They should dispatch their maintenance team to stop the AC leak, which is the source of the moisture. Do not attempt to clean significant mold growth yourself, as improper scrubbing can aerosolize spores and spread them.

For a patch larger than one square meter, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent behind the wall. The high humidity in JVC, combined with cold surfaces from constant AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive unseen. A certified mold assessor can use moisture meters and borescopes to check the wall cavity and recommend a safe remediation protocol, which often involves containment and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination.

While waiting for management, you can improve air circulation in the room and keep the AC running to lower humidity. The fastest and safest resolution is a coordinated response: the building fixes the leak, and then a specialized company handles the mold removal, providing post-remediation verification to confirm it's resolved.
