Mold behind dresser causing coughs: clean myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind our bedroom dresser in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been so humid lately and I think it’s been growing there for a while, but I only noticed it today when I was moving furniture. The patch is pretty big and blackish-green.
What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, mold growth behind furniture is common due to condensation and poor air circulation. For a large, blackish-green patch that's been there a while and is correlating with your kids' coughs, professional assessment is strongly recommended.
Attempting to clean significant mold yourself can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening respiratory issues. In villas, hidden mold within wall cavities is a frequent issue in Jumeirah due to the climate. A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent and the source of the moisture, which is the only way to prevent rapid regrowth. If you proceed with a limited clean, isolate the area, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and use a diluted vinegar or detergent solution—never bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, this only addresses surface growth you can see. For health symptoms, the only way to confirm the mold type is through lab analysis of a sample. Many reputable companies in Dubai operate their own microbiology labs for this purpose, providing a documented identification and remediation plan, which is crucial for resolving persistent issues and safeguarding your family's health. |
