Mold behind sofa causing kids' constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to worry. I’ve just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from the last time we had that heavy rain. It smells really damp and earthy. Could this be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and what’s the safest way to get this cleaned up?

Yes, that mold is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough and cold-like symptoms. The damp, earthy smell confirms active microbial growth, and the black mold you found is releasing spores into your indoor air. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue; walls can retain moisture from rain or high humidity, especially when furniture is placed against them, restricting airflow and creating a perfect environment for mold.

For the safety of your family, do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing a large patch can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the respiratory issues. The safest approach is a professional inspection and remediation. A certified inspector can assess the full extent of the growth, identify the moisture source (like a hidden leak or condensation), and take samples for lab analysis to determine the species, which informs the proper remediation protocol.

Look for a company that follows IICRC standards for mold remediation. The process should include containment of the area, use of HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safe removal of contaminated materials, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobials. Crucially, they must also identify and rectify the underlying moisture problem to prevent it from returning. After remediation, a post-clearance test by an independent third party is the best way to verify the air quality is safe again.
