Mold behind sofa: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the Marina apartment has started to feel damp, and there's a small patch of black spots that seems to be spreading since the humidity kicked in last week. I'm worried it's mold, but I'm not sure if this is something I can just wipe away with vinegar myself or if I need to call a professional company to deal with it properly.

In Dubai's high humidity, that damp wall behind furniture is a classic spot for mold growth. The black spots spreading since the humidity increased strongly suggest active mold, likely feeding on condensation or a hidden moisture source.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean with a vinegar solution, but never use bleach as it can worsen the problem by only removing the surface color and leaving the roots. However, the critical step is finding and stopping the moisture source. In Marina apartments, this is often condensation from the AC unit's cold air hitting the warm wall or a minor pipe leak.

If the area is larger, has returned after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty odor, professional assessment is recommended. They can identify the exact species and, more importantly, use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the hidden water intrusion that’s feeding it. Simply wiping the visible mold without addressing the root cause will result in it returning. Proper remediation involves containing the area to prevent spore spread, removing contaminated materials, and ensuring the wall cavity is completely dried.
