Mold behind toilet: DIY or professional removal in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet where it meets the wall. It’s been really humid lately and the bathroom’s small window doesn’t seem to be enough for ventilation. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or should I call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai, and what would that likely cost?

Small patches of bathroom mold are common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from AC use. For a patch behind a toilet, you can often handle it yourself if it covers less than one square foot and you have no respiratory sensitivities.

Start by addressing the moisture source. The humidity is likely from shower steam with inadequate ventilation. Run an exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers, and keep the window open when possible. Wipe down wet surfaces to reduce condensation.

For cleaning, a solution of detergent and water is often more effective than bleach for surface mold on non-porous tiles. Bleach can discolour grout and only lightens the mould without killing the root. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely.

If the mould returns quickly after cleaning, it may indicate a hidden issue, like a small leak from the toilet seal or water intrusion within the wall. Persistent mould or any signs of widespread growth warrant a professional assessment. They can identify the moisture source with thermal imaging and recommend remediation, which for a small area is typically a straightforward process.
