Mold behind toy chest: urgent steps for my kids' room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out their wooden toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black and green mold growing on the wall behind it. I'm panicking because they play in that room all day. What are the immediate steps I should take to clean this and who should I call to check the rest of the house?

First, please do not panic, but do treat this with urgency. Given the persistent cough in your children, this is a serious indoor air quality issue that needs immediate professional attention. The combination of black and green mold indicates a significant moisture problem, likely from condensation or a hidden leak in that exterior wall common in Jumeirah villas.

Your immediate steps: 1) Isolate the area. Move the toy chest and any other items away from the wall and keep your children out of the room until it's assessed. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this will aerosolize the spores and can worsen their respiratory symptoms. 2) For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or a UAE-approved mold cleaner (available at ACE Hardware) can be carefully applied to the surface to inhibit growth, but this is only a temporary measure. However, the visible mold is just the tip of the iceberg; the real concern is the hidden mold within the wall cavity and the spores already in the air.

Cleaning the surface does not address the root cause or the health hazard. The UAE's DM guidelines for building health and safety strongly recommend certified inspection and remediation for mold to prevent structural damage and protect occupant health. You need a professional inspection to identify the moisture source (e.g., AC drain line leak, rising damp) and conduct air quality testing to determine the spore count and species.

For the safety of your family, you must call a certified mold inspection company. We use thermal imaging and borescopes to see inside your walls and provide a full assessment and remediation plan.

Call us immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an emergency inspection. We serve Jumeirah and can have a team there quickly to help you resolve this safely.
