Mold behind wardrobe: call maintenance or cleaning company?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because we never move the heavy furniture. It's a pretty large patch and the wall feels damp to the touch. What's the best way to handle a mold issue like this in Dubai—should I call maintenance from my building in Jumeirah Village Circle first, or go straight to a professional cleaning company?

Given the damp wall and size of the patch, this is a moisture issue, not just a surface cleaning problem. In Dubai's climate, hidden condensation or a small leak from an AC pipe or external seepage is a common cause behind furniture.

Your first call should be to your building maintenance. They are responsible for the building envelope and internal plumbing. They need to inspect for and fix the source of the moisture—otherwise, the mold will return even after a perfect cleaning. Document the issue with photos and a clear request to address the dampness.

Once the moisture source is fixed, then address the mold itself. For a large, established patch, professional remediation is advised to safely remove it and prevent spores from spreading to other areas during cleaning. They use containment, HEPA filtration, and specific antimicrobial protocols. A general cleaning company often lacks this expertise and may just spread the contamination.

Given the symptoms, a post-remediation test to confirm the air quality is safe is a prudent step, especially with children in the home. This is typically a separate, lab-based service.
