Mold behind wardrobe: call management or cleaning company?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s mold. What’s the best way to handle this properly in Dubai – should I call my building management first or go straight to a professional cleaning company?

Start by moving the wardrobe to fully expose the area and confirm it's mold. In Dubai's high humidity, especially with AC units creating cold surfaces against walls, condensation and hidden mold growth behind furniture is common.

For a rental, your first call should be to the building management or landlord. Under Dubai regulations, they are typically responsible for investigating and repairing the source of the moisture, which is often a leaking pipe, faulty external waterproofing, or an AC condensation drain issue. They must fix the root cause; otherwise, the mold will return after any cleaning.

Do not let them simply paint over it. A professional inspection is needed to assess the extent within the wall and identify the species, as some types like Aspergillus are more concerning in enclosed spaces. Remediation involves containing the area, physically removing the contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and treating the area with antimicrobial solutions.

A reputable cleaning company with microbiology expertise can provide this, but the building owner should coordinate and pay for it if the issue is structural. If management is unresponsive, a professional assessment can document the problem and its likely cause, which strengthens your case. For a serious spread, this is not a DIY cleaning job due to the risk of spreading spores.
