Mold behind wardrobe causing cough: DIY or professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah apartment. It’s been there a while I think, a pretty big black patch on the wall that’s slightly damp to the touch, and it’s definitely the source of a weird smell we’ve had for a couple months. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Given the symptoms and description, this requires professional assessment and remediation. The damp black patch indicates an active moisture source, likely from condensation or a hidden leak common in Dubai's climate. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't address the root moisture problem or eliminate deep-seated spores, and it can release harmful fumes into your apartment.

Persistent coughs in children linked to visible mold, especially when damp and causing odor, strongly suggest the environment is affecting indoor air quality. In Dubai, the high humidity and constant AC use can create perfect conditions for mold behind furniture where airflow is restricted. Proper remediation involves identifying and fixing the moisture source, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, and using specialized antimicrobials—not bleach.

For a case like this in a Jumeirah apartment, a professional inspection is recommended. They can perform moisture mapping to find the source and conduct air or surface sampling if needed to identify the species, as some types are more problematic than others. DIY attempts often disturb the colony, sending a high concentration of spores into the air and potentially worsening the respiratory symptoms you're seeing. Look for a provider that follows IICRC standards and can provide a detailed scope of work with verification that the area is dry and clean post-remediation.
