Mold behind wardrobe causing coughs: remove it ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold hidden behind it, probably from the humidity. I’ve been having headaches myself and we can’t seem to shake this off.
What’s the fastest and safest way to get rid of this ourselves, and should I be taking my family to a doctor for these specific symptoms?

The fastest initial step is to isolate the area. Keep the kids and anyone with respiratory issues out of the room. Open windows to ventilate if outdoor humidity is low, but in Deira, running a dehumidifier or the AC on dry mode is often more effective than bringing in humid air.
For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used to scrub the wall and the back of the wardrobe. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The wood may need sanding if the mold has penetrated, which creates more spores—this is often a job for professionals. Given the persistent coughs and headaches, a doctor's visit is strongly recommended. Describe the mold exposure; they can assess if symptoms are allergic reactions or something more. In Dubai's climate, this scenario is common. Condensation forms on cold walls behind furniture, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold that AC alone cannot dry. For a patch large enough to be "huge," DIY cleaning often addresses the visible growth but not the root moisture or hidden spores. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source (like a leaking pipe in the wall or simply chronic condensation) and verify the species. Some black molds are allergens, others can produce toxins; only a lab analysis can confirm the type and associated health risks. The Dubai Municipality recommends licensed contractors for remediation to ensure it's done to public health standards. |
