Mold behind wardrobe: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots spreading behind our bedroom wardrobe, probably from the AC unit on that wall. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still really strong and I'm worried it's affecting our sleep. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach solution or should I just call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and almost certainly professional remediation. The presence of a strong, persistent musty odor is a significant indicator of an active mold colony, likely extending beyond the visible surface growth you see behind the wardrobe.
While a DIY approach with bleach is a common first instinct, it is not recommended, especially in the UAE's climate. Bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed mold roots deep within porous materials like drywall. It may bleach the visible spots, giving a false sense of success, while the underlying problem continues to grow and release spores. Vinegar is a slightly better antifungal but is ineffective against all mold species and cannot address a established infestation. The root cause here is almost certainly moisture from the AC unit. In Dubai, high ambient humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for condensation, particularly on cold surfaces like supply ducts or walls adjacent to AC units. This persistent dampness is what the mold is feeding on. Simply cleaning the surface without identifying and rectifying the moisture source is a temporary fix at best. For a case like this, a professional assessment is crucial. Our certified inspectors use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source and assess the full extent of the contamination, often hidden within wall cavities. Remediation then involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions to eliminate the colony. Crucially, we will diagnose the AC issue to prevent recurrence. Given the health implications of prolonged exposure, especially in a bedroom affecting sleep, I strongly advise against a DIY solution.
