Mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot this winter, and I just found a patch of black spots in the corner behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We’re in an older villa in Mirdif, and I’m worried it's been there a while, especially with all the humidity from the AC. Is it worth paying for a professional mold inspection, or can I handle this myself with a cleaner from Ace Hardware?

That black spot behind the wardrobe, combined with your kids' coughing, is a strong indicator that a professional inspection is a wise investment. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for mold to thrive in hidden spaces like behind furniture and inside walls.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), a DIY clean with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner can be effective. However, the fact it's behind a wardrobe suggests it's been there awhile, likely due to condensation from the AC or a past, unnoticed humidity issue. This means the visible patch might just be the "bloom" of a larger problem within the wall itself.

A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the moisture—without that, you're just treating the symptom and it will almost certainly return. They can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding potential health risks and the correct remediation method, especially with children involved.

Given your location in an older Mirdif villa and the health symptoms present, the cost of an inspection is justified for peace of mind. It will determine the true extent of the problem and provide a science-backed plan to resolve it safely.
