Mold behind wardrobe: DIY or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to handle this properly, and should I hire a professional company or is it something I can tackle myself with products from ACE?

That black spotting behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of mold growth, almost certainly due to trapped humid air and condensation in our Dubai climate. The wall behind large furniture becomes a cold spot with poor air circulation, especially with year-round AC, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.
For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. Move the wardrobe completely away from the wall to allow the area to dry thoroughly. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Clean the hard surface with a detergent solution or a dedicated mold remover from a hardware store. The key is to address the moisture source—improve air circulation in that corner and consider a dehumidifier to manage the indoor humidity that condenses on cold walls. However, if the visible growth is extensive, has a musty odor, or if the drywall itself feels soft or damp, this indicates a more serious moisture issue within the wall cavity. In these cases, professional remediation is strongly advised. They have the equipment to properly contain the area, assess the full extent of the damage hidden within the wall, and safely remove and dispose of contaminated materials like insulation or drywall, which is often necessary here. A reputable firm will also use air scrubbers and provide post-remediation verification to confirm the spore count has returned to normal levels, which is a critical step DIY can't accomplish. For peace of mind and your family's health, an assessment is a prudent first step. |
