Mold behind wardrobe: DIY removal or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, probably from all the humidity. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came right back in a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner from ACE Hardware, or is it time to call in a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the UAE's high humidity and the microclimate created by placing furniture against an exterior wall. The fact that the mold recurred after a vinegar cleaning indicates a persistent underlying moisture issue that a surface-level DIY approach cannot resolve.

The wall behind the wardrobe is a prime location for condensation buildup. Your air conditioner cools the room, but the stagnant, trapped air behind the furniture allows the wall's temperature to drop below the dew point, causing moisture to condense and create a perpetual food source for mold. Vinegar is a mild fungistatic agent but is not a registered biocide and is ineffective at penetrating porous materials like drywall or paint to kill the root structure (mycelium). Stronger chemicals from a hardware store, such as bleach, are also ineffective and potentially hazardous; they may bleach the visible spores but leave the organism alive to regrow, while also releasing harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into your indoor air.

For a recurrence of this nature, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact extent of the moisture intrusion and humidity meters to pinpoint the condensation source. The remediation process is technical: it involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, physically removing the contaminated porous materials, and treating the cavity with professional-grade, EPA-approved antimicrobials. Crucially, we then identify and rectify the source of the humidity to prevent future recurrence, which is a critical step often missed in DIY attempts.

Given the health risks associated with black mold exposure and the technical requirements for proper remediation, calling a professional is the recommended course of action.
