Mold behind wardrobe from AC leak, dangerous for toddler?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall in our master bedroom, and now we've spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate behind the wardrobe. It's been slowly getting bigger over the last few weeks. I'm worried about my toddler who sleeps in there with us. Can anyone recommend a good company for mold remediation and give me a rough idea of what it might cost to have this professionally cleaned and the leak fixed?

That black mould is a definite concern, especially with a toddler in the room. In Dubai's high humidity, AC condensation leaks are a primary cause of indoor mould growth, creating the perfect damp environment for it to thrive.

The immediate health risk depends on the mould species and your child's sensitivity. Common black moulds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus can cause persistent allergy-like symptoms—coughing, congestion, and skin irritation—which are particularly impactful for developing respiratory systems. While not all black mould is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, its presence indicates a moisture problem that needs urgent attention.

Your priority is stopping the source. The AC leak must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent the mould from returning. For remediation, this is not a simple DIY cleaning job given the size and location behind furniture. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize spores throughout the room. Professional remediation is strongly advised to properly contain the area, remove the contaminated materials, and treat the space with industrial-grade equipment to eradicate the growth at its source.

In Dubai, reputable remediation companies should operate under Dubai Municipality guidelines for environmental health and safety. Look for providers who conduct a pre- and post-remediation inspection, ideally with lab analysis, to confirm the mould type and verify it has been fully resolved. They should provide a detailed scope of work and warranty. Keep the room well-ventilated and consider relocating your toddler until the issue is resolved.
