Mold behind wardrobe: handyman or professional, and cost?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It wasn't there before, but I think the humidity from last month's rain and the AC condensation might have caused it. I'm worried it's spreading but have no idea what this costs to fix. Is this a job for a handyman or do I absolutely need to hire a professional mold removal company, and roughly what should I budget for a bedroom-sized problem?

Based on your description of black mold growth behind a wardrobe in JVC, this is a situation that warrants professional attention, not a handyman fix. The recent exceptional rainfall and the resulting high ambient humidity, combined with year-round AC use creating significant temperature differentials and condensation, is a classic cause for mold proliferation in Dubai. A handyman may temporarily clean the visible spots but will not address the underlying moisture source or the potential for hidden contamination within the wall cavity.

For a proper remediation, the process involves: isolating the area, removing the contaminated materials (e.g., section of drywall), HEPA vacuuming, chemical treatment with EPA-approved fungicides, and applying a preventative antimicrobial coating. Crucially, the root cause—likely condensation from an AC supply line or a minor leak—must be identified and rectified to prevent recurrence.

Budgeting is difficult without a visual inspection, but for a localized issue in a single bedroom, you should anticipate a range from AED 1,500 to AED 4,000. This includes assessment, remediation, and a post-clearance test to ensure the spore count is within Dubai Municipality's indoor air quality standards.

Given the health risks associated with mycotoxin exposure and the technical requirements for proper removal, I strongly recommend a professional inspection.
