Mold behind wardrobe in Dubai: call maintenance or clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a line of black, fuzzy mold along the bottom edge of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Downtown Dubai. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, and the room has had a weird, earthy smell for a while that I thought was just dust. What’s the best way to handle this—should I call maintenance from our building first, or is this something I can clean myself with products from a local store?

This sounds like a classic case of condensation-induced mold, very common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use cooling exterior walls. The dampness and smell confirm an active moisture issue.

Do not clean it yourself yet. Wiping visible mold without addressing the moisture source will cause it to return quickly. Your first call should be to your building's maintenance team. In Dubai, the responsibility for structural issues like potential leaking pipes inside the wall or inadequate external waterproofing (a known issue in some older towers) typically falls on the property management. They need to inspect for and repair any leaks.

Once the leak is fixed and the wall is completely dry, then address the mold. For a small, contained area, you can clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover from Ace Hardware. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, if the mold covers more than one square meter or has a strong musty odor, a professional assessment is wise to check for hidden growth inside the wall cavity. Companies with their own microbiology lab can identify the species and verify the cleanup was successful through post-remediation testing.
