Mold behind wardrobe in Dubai: call management or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots appearing on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. The wall feels a bit damp, and my wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai—should I call the building management first or get a professional mold remediation company myself?

The damp wall behind your wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially with condensation from year-round AC use. Since you already see visible mold and have health symptoms, you should act promptly.

Start by informing your building management. Dubai Law No. 26 of 2007 and the Strata Law place responsibility for structural issues, including leaks from common pipes or the building envelope, on the Owners' Association. Document the issue with photos and a formal email to them. They are obligated to investigate the source of the moisture, which is the critical first step.

Concurrently, given the visible growth and your wife's reaction, you should arrange for a professional mold inspection yourself. A certified inspector can conduct moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the mold species and its extent. This provides an objective, scientific baseline. If the building management's fix addresses the leak but not the contamination, you have the data to show remediation is still needed.

For now, avoid disturbing the mold. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores. Keep the area ventilated and consider moving the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to improve air circulation. The goal is to stop the moisture source first, then have professionals safely remove the contaminated materials.
